AI in Graphic Design: Threat or Tool?

Few topics generate as much anxiety among designers as artificial intelligence. It's understandable: any tool that can generate an image in seconds seems, at first glance, like a direct threat to the profession. But the numbers and day-to-day practice tell a more balanced story.

What the numbers show

A survey cited by the RGD (Association of Registered Graphic Designers) shows that 88% of companies already use some AI tool in design, but only 18% reported a reduced need for designers. Another estimate, from McKinsey, suggests that up to 30% of tasks in creative industries could be automated this decade, which is very different from saying 30% of professionals will be replaced.

What AI already does well

  • Fast background removal and image adjustments
  • Generating variations and composition/color suggestions
  • Early prototyping and concept exploration
  • Repetitive production tasks that used to take hours

What still depends on a human

Creative direction, brand storytelling, and a nuanced read of what a company actually needs to communicate remain human work. The market is splitting: commodity work keeps getting cheaper and more automated, while work guided by repertoire and good taste becomes even more valued.

How I use AI in my process

I use AI as a speed tool: to explore quick variations, generate references, and speed up production steps. But the final curation (the decision about what actually represents the client's brand, based on over 15 years of experience in visual identity, packaging, and audiovisual production) remains entirely mine.
